(September 22, 2010) The new housing code is proving popular with builders for quick approvals of new houses in areas of land release on Sydney's fringe. According to preliminary figures from the Department of Planning, the number of complying development certificates being issued for single dwellings increased from 26 per cent of all applications in 2008-09 to 42 per cent in 2009-10 in Camden Council's area. At Liverpool they rose from 23 per cent to 41 per cent and at Campbelltown from 11 per cent to 21 per cent. Complying development certificates can be issued under the housing code or under a council's own complying development code and avoid the need for a development application. The Housing Industry Association says the code cuts red tape and offers a faster path for builders and home owners but says it needs more work, especially in the area of education. The code has cut the cost of building a house by $6500 in Sydney and $2500 in regional areas, it says. (Source:theAge.com.au) |
