DHL to expand in western China

HONG KONGDeutsche Post-DHL's express division will continue expanding its investment inChinaespecially in the western regionsaid Ken Allenchief executive of DHL Express.

"Our business there is growing faster than the rest of the countryWe always keep the investmentsahead of the demand curve," Allen saidwithout disclosing further detailsin an exclusive interviewwith China Daily.

Wu Dongmingmanaging director of DHL-Sinotrans International Air Courier Ltda joint venture incharge of DHL's express business in Chinasaid notable business growth was seen in cities in thewestern and central regionssuch as ChengduChongqing and Wuhan.

To meet the growth in business volumethe company will consider scheduling more flights toconnect Chengdu and Chongqing with its central Asian hub in Hong KongWu said.

"It's all because the growth continuesand we have to addcapacity to the market," Allen said.

"Once the North Asian hub opens upwe will be looking atmore direct flights out of Shanghai into the key Asianmarkets," he said. "It is going to be a big boost to ourbusiness overall in China."

The company reported 216 million euros ($311.5 millionin pretax profit during the first quarter,compared with 110 million euros during the same period in 2010 and a 392 million euro loss in thefirst quarter of 2009.

Howeveras China is keen on improving its economic and trade structureits rapid GDP increase isestimated to slow to less thanpercent this year and imports and exports are also expected todecline.

Since the beginning of the yeartrade growth has declinedcompared with 2010.

China's exports in April rose by 3.4 percentage points over those in the first quarterbut importsdropped by 10.8 percentage pointsaccording to the Ministry of Commerce.

DHL remains confident about China's performance this year. "Maybe the overall growth rate of theChinese economy is going to slow down a little bitbut that's still going to make it one of fastestgrowing markets in the DHL network," Allen said.

"Some of (China'sexport figures have slowed down a little bitbut we have seen our businessholding on very well," he added.

Between January and Aprilrevenue in China's express industry jumped by 25.7 percent year-on-year to 21.42 billion yuanThe overseas express business accounted for 26.9 percent of the totalrevenueaccording to China's State Post Bureau.
