November 26, 2009 The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is offering thousands of dollars to people who entice doctors from overseas to work in Australia. The AMA wants to find another 500 doctors to work in general practice around the country, especially in regional areas. If the nominated doctor meets all the training requirements and agrees to practise in Australia for at least 12 months, then his or her nominee will be given $3,000. The AMA's Western Australian boss, Gary Geelhoed, says it is a unique approach. "We are trying to highlight the problems we have with a lack of doctors by making this offer, but the offer is very real," he said. "We have a long and proud track record of attracting doctors to Australia and West Australia in particular. "It's a spotters' fee basically, to put it bluntly, but basically it's a win-win situation if we can get more doctors."
