Average earnings on the rise Print

Average weekly ordinary time earnings for adult full-time employees rose 1.1 per cent in the three months to February, taking the annual rate of growth to 5.8 per cent, seasonally adjusted, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said today.

The quarterly survey also showed AWOTE for the private and public sectors combined was $1242.20 for the quarter.

Private sector AWOTE was up 0.9 per cent in the quarter at $1217.80, seasonally adjusted, for an annual rise of 5.6 per cent.

Public sector AWOTE rose 1.9 per cent to $1,327.40, seasonally adjusted, in the same period for an annual rise of 6.3 per cent.

The annual increases means that on average, wages are rising at twice the rate of inflation, which is at 2.9 per cent.
